The warmer temperatures and relaxed vibe of the summer season make it a perfect time to attend an outdoor concert. Lucky for Houstonians, their city is host to many free concerts. Some of which are even annual events that have become traditions for Houston families. So grab your friends or load up the family to enjoy an eclectic mix of live music throughout the summer months at one or all of these free concerts happening around Houston. With every event on the list starting after 6 p.m., there’s no need to worry about melting in the hot, Houston sun either.

Usher in the summer season Texas-style with Texas Folklife’s Accordion Kings and Queens concert at Miller Outdoor Theater. Celebrating 30 years of preserving and promoting Texas music and culture, Texas Folklife continues their mission of making Texas-based arts experiences accessible to all with their free annual concert. Music-lovers will hear an eclectic mix of classic music styles known for influencing the musical roots of Lone Star State, like polka, conjunto, country western, zydeco, and Cajun. The performance lineup includes Debra Peters & The Love Saints​, Jerome Batiste and the ZydeKo Players, Big Squeeze Champions, and Los Texmaniacs​ with special guests of Los Super Seven. Open seating is on the hill at the outdoor venue and free tickets for covered seating, up to four per person age 16 and older, are available at the box office the day of the show from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Join fellow music lovers every Thursday in June at Discovery Green for the Sounds Like Houston! summer concert series presented by University of Houston-Downtown. Though the free concerts are ongoing throughout the year, the family-friendly summer series kicks off June 11 with a performance by Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie, a good times Zydeco band straight from Louisiana. Lawn chairs and picnics are welcome at the free concerts, but leave the glass containers and alcoholic beverages at home. Grandparents, parents and kids alike can enjoy The Houston Symphony’s rendition of beloved Disney songs during Disney In Concert at Houston’s premier outdoor concert venue, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Kids can dress as their favorite princess or Disney character and sing-a-long to the classic collection of songs. Free lawn seating is available so pack a blanket or rent a chair from the venue. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The Houston Symphony’s summer concert series at Miller Outdoor Theater has become a summer mainstay. Exhilarating enough to entertain concert-goers of all ages, the Houston Symphony showcases special guests and conductors during its free outdoor concerts. Though tickets are required, free tickets for covered seating are available at the box office on the day of each performance between 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. If tickets are leftover after 1 p.m., the box office reopens one hour before show time to hand out remaining tickets. Concerts are held at 8:30 p.m. on various dates throughout the summer months, so check the venue calendar or call for concert details.

Head to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion the day before Independence Day for a free concert to celebrate our nation’s birthday. A tradition for over 25 years, the Star-Spangled Salute showcases everyone’s patriotic favorites exquisitely performed by The Houston Symphony. The concert starts at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Food and blankets are allowed in at the venue, but check the website for a complete list of permitted items.
