Buffalo Bayou Park is located between Sabine and Shepard roads on the bayou. Lit areas and nearby parking make it a convenient place to take the family. When you ask a Houstonian to name a park, likely the answer will be Memorial Park. It’s the city’s answer to New York’s Central Park. Memorial Park is an expansive region just to the west of downtown with tennis, golf, trails and much more. The picnic loop trail is a good option for families to bike along as it is a closed roadway with few hills. The only thing to be cautious about is the presence of other bikers and rollerbladers. But this is a good opportunity for parents to teach their children about trail etiquette and how to deal with other trail users.

This park offers many amenities for families, including 25 miles of hike and bike trails. Please adhere to signs on trails marked for “foot traffic only.” Besides biking, your family can enjoy picnicking, visiting the George Observatory, fishing and camping. Please keep an eye on your youngest children because the park is also home to native alligators.

On Houston’s far west side is Cullen Park. Besides the usual playgrounds and picnic areas, Cullen Park has a 3.3-mile bike path that links two sections of the park. For biking with the kids, you might consider only pedaling a small portion of this straight trail before turning back to keep the young ones from becoming too tired. Other park attractions include a misting play area to cool off kids during the heat of summer, an archery range and baseball fields.
