Houston is still horse country despite being the fourth largest city in America. Houstonians can drive to high-quality riding facilities with stunning natural trails in as little as 15 minutes, in time for a ride before heading to the office or after work before sundown. The following are horseback riding facilities north and south of Houston.

Cypress trails offers boarding stables and an opportunity to enjoy pleasure and endurance riding seven days a week in spectacular countryside in Humble, not far from Bush Intercontinental Airport. The trails are owned by Gold Medalist & International Endurance Champion Darolyn Butler. Rides start at $50 for one hour, $70 for 2 hours and $80 for three hours, or $150 all day. Guests may also choose adventure rides, dinner rides to La Cabana and 12-mile rides to Pundt Park.

The Spread offers a relaxed, natural and informal setting on an ample property near the interesection of Foxshire St. and Bridgeport Road about 15 minutes’ drive south of downtown and only three miles from the Astrodome. The owners have 14 horses, all good-natured and in good health, including painted saddlebreds, Tennessee walkers quarter horses, palominos and thoroughbreds. The ranch is open seven days a week by appointment only at a fee of $40 per hour; lessons are $50 for adults and $55 for children, payable in cash only.

B L & J’s Horse Farm is primarily known as a horseback riding school for beginners through advanced riders, offering lessons in English and Western style riding. Cat Spring Ranch is a working cattle ranch on 2,100 acres with easy, groomed trails including gentle sloping hills and no creek crossings. The ranch has stables for 23 horses, campsites with toilet facilities and showers, horse tie-ups, water and streams. The ranch functions year around. Call in advance for more information.

Huntsville State Park is a scenic 220-acre property located off I-45 north of Conroe and adjacent to Sam Houston National Park. It is operated by a non-profit organization and provides a full range of hiking, fishing, boating and horseback riding opportunities. The designated provider of horses for the park is 2E Stables, which offers rides that last about an hour for $30.00. The stables, like the park, are open seven days a week. The park has an entry fee of $5 per adult. Reservations are recommended and payable in advance by credit card for group rides. Generally, other rides are payable in cash only.
