Summer is a time for family activities. With the kids home from school and festivals scheduled on a daily basis, summer is the ideal time to attend special events across the Houston area and engage in family togetherness. The summer is often over faster than one would expect, but there is still time to enjoy summer fun before the back to school season begins. These are the best last minute summer activities for families in Houston:

Located a short drive northwest of Houston, Bryan, Texas is host to the annual Harvest Festival. Now in its 40th year, the Harvest Festival is a stomping good time, complete with grape harvesting, a stomp fest, and wine tasting for the adults. Messina Hof Winery and Resort hosts this family- friendly event and sells different packages, including ones with added lunch and a special, reduced price package deal for kids. It’s great fun for children who often can’t wait to jump on those grapes and stomp them flat while mom and dad sip on delicious, vintage wine.

It’s an ongoing galactic battle between Star Wars and Star Trek for outer space supremacy. The Children’s Museum of Houston is asking all children to join them for Trekkies vs. Star Wars, a fun battle that pits fans of each side against each other for intergalactic dominance. The Children’s Museum asks kids to dress up as their favorite character and fight for victory. Resistance is futile, so come ready to defend your turf.

August is designated as Jazz Month in Houston and the celebration begins with the Houston International Jazz Festival. Held at the Revention Center, this three- day festival presents outstanding jazz music from some of the top jazz artists in the world. Highlights of this family event include the Battle of the Brass Bands and the special kickoff party on Friday, held at Chillum Lounge and Grill. This year marks the 27th celebration of the Houston International Jazz Festival, one of the most anticipated late summer events in downtown Houston.

Everyone loves a game of bingo and Blanket Bingo at Market Square Park is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and play a few rounds of this popular pastime. Guests are encouraged to bring their own blanket or lawn chairs to the downtown Houston park, find a place on the grass, and let the fun begin. In addition to the games of bingo, there will music and prizes throughout the evening. Proceeds benefit Market Square Park and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, so not only do you get to partake in family fun, but you also get to support two important non- profit causes in the process.

Do you have any aspiring artists in your family? If you do, then you don’t want to miss Hands on Houston. Held at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, this free event is all about crafting. Teachers select a craft relating to one of the exhibits on display and then step eager participants through the crafting process. The activity includes materials and all members of the family are encouraged to get creative, regardless of age. Hands on Houston is all about education and fun and it’s an enjoyable way to wind down the summer season.
