Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Astros announced Sunday that catcher Brian McCann will be placed on the seven-day concussion DL retroactive to Saturday. McCann will be able to come off of the DL, on Friday when the team starts their series with the Baltimore Orioles.

Manager A.J. Hinch shared with the media before Sunday’s game that McCann has actually been dealing with symptoms for a while.

“The catching position is always very difficult because the number of balls you take off the head, the foul tips, the balls in the dirt that come up and hit you in the face,” A.J. Hinch via Brian McTaggart. “He said he’s had this before and he felt like he was going to be ok, the way the schedule mapped out he was playing about every other day, we had an off day in there, so he was not saying anything figuring (Sunday) was going to be the day he was feeling great.”

Hinch is not sure exactly when McCann suffered his concussion, but shared that during Sunday night baseball against the New York Yankees he was on the receiving end of a pitch that shook him up.

To fill McCann’s spot in the short-term the team has called up catcher Juan Centeno from Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies. Centeno was batting .368 in 22 games for the Grizzlies.
