After a few strange weeks, the Houston Rockets have officially renounced the rights to forward Donatas Motiejunas allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Rockets GM Daryl Morey made the announcement late in the afternoon on Thursday saying the team had been in “extensive talks” with Motiejunas, his agents, and the NBA front office, but no resolution could be reached.

“Donatas was a true professional throughout his four seasons with the Rockets,” said Morey in his announcement, “We wish Donatas the best moving forward and want to thank him for his contributions both on the court and in the community.”

Donatas Motiejunas spent 4 seasons in Houston averaging 7.8 points per game and 4 rebounds per game with the 2014/15 season being his best when he started over 60 games and was arguably the Rockets second best player for most of the year averaging 12 points in 28.7 minutes per game.

Motiejunas dealt with injuries the past season and a quarter and never played in more than 71 games in his 4 year stint with the Rockets. Houston had agreed to trade Motiejunas to the Detroit Pistons before the trade deadline last year, but after failing his physical the trade was voided.

The free agent forward signed a 4 year, $37 million offer sheet with the Brooklyn Nets earlier this month only for Houston to quickly match the offer. After disagreements with some of the incentives on the contract Motiejunas eventually signed a 4 year, $31 million contract with the Rockets.

According to multiple reports, Motiejunas skipped his physical late last week.No statement was made as to why.

Motiejunas is now free to sign with any team in the NBA, other than the Nets due to free agency rules that disallow him to sign with Brooklyn after Houston matched his offer sheet.

The Rockets have used the roster spot to re-sign guard Bobby Brown who should be available for Friday’s home game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
