Houston (CBS Houston) – With a quick turnaround the Dynamo turn their attention to hosting Sporting Kansas City in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup’s round of 16.
The U.S. Open Cup gives the Dynamo an opportunity, with a deep run, to bring home a trophy this season while still progressing under the management of Wade Barrett.
Wednesday’s match comes after just one full day at home. The team traveled back from Portland on Monday and will have a busy week with the match against Sporting KC and then hosting Philadelphia on Wednesday.
On June 15 the Dynamo topped San Antonio FC, 4-0 to advance in the U.S. Open Cup, and thanks to some good fortune, will have the chance to host Wednesday. During that match the Dynamo used a mixture of normal starters and reserves.
Mauro Manotas, Alex, Raul Rodriguez and Leonel Miranda all scored goals for the Dynamo in their shut out victory against San Antonio FC.
Sporting Kansas City is next up for the Dynamo, a team they played earlier this season in MLS competition on May 7. The Dynamo topped their rival, and former Dynamo captain Brad Davis, 2-0.
Sporting Kansas City was able to advance with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United FC. Diego Rubio scored the go ahead goal in the 109th minute.
Both Graham Zusi and Matt Besler returned to Sporting Kansas City after spending the last few weeks with the United States Men’s National Team during Copa America.
Wednesday’s match is a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals when Sporting Kansas City advanced past the Dynamo, 3-1 and went on to claim last year’s trophy.
