The Houston Texans filled a big need on Thursday night when they selected speedy wide receiver Will Fuller in the first round of the NFL Draft. Now that the Texans have their deep threat wide receiver what should we expect them to do on Friday in rounds two and three in Chicago?
There are four positions you should think about when looking at the big board for the Texans that they might take on Friday.
1. Defensive Line
The Texans have the best defensive line in the National Football League and they really only have one starter on thier roster right now. Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork is possibly going into his last NFL season. Second year DT Christian Covington is a little undersized for tackle, but can do the job if need be. The Texans really need to find someone to compliment J.J.Watt on the other side of the line and either have a field day being marked one-on-one all time or take a little attention away from Watt. Look for the Texans to get at least one defensive lineman on Friday. The best news for the Texans is that d-line might be the deepest position in the draft.
A’Shawn Robinson (DT, Alabama)
Kevin Dodd (DE, Clemson)
Jarran Reed (DT, Alabama)
Kamalei Correa (DE, Boise State)
Jihad Ward (DE, Illinois)
Chris Jones (DT, Mississippi State)
2. Offensive Line
The Texans need some help on the offensive line, maybe more than anywhere else on the field. The only sure thing on their line right now is Derek Newton. Duane Brown is coming off an injury that ended his season that he is currently rehabbing, Xavier Su’a Filo is still a bit unproven at guard and Brandon Brook and Ben Jones left. They did sign two offensive linemen, Jeff Allen and Tony Bergstrom, but those guys are probably not the answer, just good depth. They do have Tight End Kendall Lamm who has been known to play some tackle as well. The Texans will be looking to grab an interior offensive lineman that can contribute on Friday.
Jason Spriggs (OT, Indiana)
Cody Whitehair (OG, Kansas State)
Evan Boehm (C, Missouri)
Christian Westerman (OG, Arizona State)
3. Tight End
All due respect to the aforementioned Lamm, the Texans need a playmaker at tight end. Ryan Griffin has some promise but hasn’t really shown his ability to consistently catch balls and block pass rushers. Look for the Texans to grab a tight end in the second or third round if a talent is there that Bill O’Brien feels can fill a void for the Texans.
Hunter Henry (TE, Arkansas)
Austin Hooper (TE, Stanford)
Jerell Adams (TE, South Carolina) [This is a Matt Murphy special, he loves this guy]
4. Running Back
BUT THE TEXANS SIGNED LAMAR MILLER SHOULDN’T THEY LOOK AT A SAFETY!? I hear you voice in my head, but the Texans could look at a running back if the right guy falls. It never hurts to have a second guy who can take some carries in the backfield and make some plays and some pressure off Lamar Miller. There are some guys that might be too good to pass up in the NFL where you can never have too many weapons.
Derrick Henry (RB, Alabama)
Devontae Booker (RB, Utah)
C.J. Prosise (RB, Notre Dame)
Jordan Howard (RB, Indiana)
We’ll see what the Houston Texans do on Friday night, but don’t be suprised if two fo the above positions are filled. And make sure to remember who told you about them when you’re bragging to your friends like you thought about it.
