HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) -The Texans already have plans for their talented first round pick Will Fuller.

“Will will come in and he will start off on the outside,” said Texans head coach Bill O’Brien, “but he does a number of different things. He’ll start off as an outside receiver but as he learns and he gets better every day, we’ll begin to move him around and do different things with him.”

For the first time in his time as general manager, Rick Smith moved up in the first round. It cost his team their sixth-round pick in next year’s draft and their 22nd overall selection to move up to the 21st spot.

Smith knew they might need to make that move to ensure themselves a shot at Fuller.

“We felt like there may be a run on the position and he was a guy that we felt strongly about and we didn’t want to take a chance on not getting him.”

TCU’s Josh Doctson and Ole Miss’ Laquan Treadwell went in the next two selections.

O’Brien said it was clear they preferred Fuller.

“Rick and I considered everybody that was available at that pick and at every position. We think that Josh Doctson is a heck of a player too we just felt that Will Fuller was the guy that would help our team.”

One of Fuller’s early scholarship offers was to play for O’Brien when he was the head coach at Penn State. He later decided against playing for the Nittany Lions thanks to the various sanctions the school was facing.

Despite not playing for O’Brien, the Texans head man mentioned that Fuller would see some familiar concepts from his Notre Dame playbook in his Texans edition. He also came “highly recommended” from Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly according to O’Brien.

For the first time in their history, the Texans have a legit, young, deep threat. Those abilities were attractive to the team.

“One of the things we looked at was definitely his ability to be a vertical threat,” O’Brien said. He went on to praise Fuller’s ability to track the deep pass and make over the shoulder catches.

Now with this selection behind them, the Texans turn to rounds two and three Friday night as they look to continue to add new pieces and playmakers.
