It’s long been known the Texans since the bye week have been playing good defensive football. But during the team’s current three-game win streak they just might have exceeded it and could be playing their best heading into the playoffs.

“Absolutely,” cornerback Johnathan Joseph said when asked if the Texans are playing their best defensive football.

The Texans have held their last three opponents to an average of 7.3 points a game, a fry cry from the days of giving up 40 point games.

“That’s where we are right now as a defense, there is still room for improvement,” Joseph said, “we can only be happy for where we are right now, from where we were at, at the beginning of the year.”

Joseph leads the Texans in pass breakups with 22, which is good enough for the fourth most in the NFL. Joseph and his defensive back counterparts are a big reason the Texans are giving so many teams grief since the bye week.

The Texans defense beat up on the teams inside their division, but they also did well against some of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. They held the Bengals Andy Dalton to under 200 yards passing and also held Drew Brees without a touchdown for the first time in 45 games.

The Texans might not have a 10 game win streak like the Chiefs, they are riding three straight masterful defensive performances.

Against the Colts and Matt Hasselbeck, the defense broke up five passes, one interception, eight quarterback hits and three sacks. Against the Titans and Zach Mettenberger, the defense had seven pass break-ups, one interception, eight quarterback hits and one sack. In the season finale with the Jaguars and Blake Bortles, the defense had 13 passes defended (4 by Joseph), two interceptions, 12 quarterback hits, and eight sacks.

“I can’t really remember a time where I have been on a defense, that’s been this dominant, week after week, after week,” Joseph said.

The Texans are heading into Wildcard card weekend this Saturday, a completely different defensive team from the start of the season.
