Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans have signed defensive tackle Devon Still to a futures contract.
Teams can sign players to futures contracts as soon as the previous regular season is over, but the contract won’t count against the salary cap or 53-man limit. Instead, it’ll count against the salary cap and 90-man camp limit of the following season.
Still, a former Bengals lineman, has gained notoriety nationwide for his daughter’s fight with cancer. #LeahStrong is a commonly used hashtag to show support for Still’s young daughter who has been fighting cancer for the past two-plus years.
The story broke when the Bengals signed Still to their practice squad after being cut before the 2014 season. He found out just before training camp that his, then 4-year-old daughter Leah had cancer. Being on the practice squad allowed Still to still receive health benefits from the league and allowed him to travel more to be with his daughter during treatment. He eventually made the Bengals 53-man roster during the 2014 season.
The story became national and the Texans even sent a gift basket to Leah.
