HOUSTON (CBS Houston) – If the Bengals beat the Broncos tonight in Denver – a game you’ll hear on SportsRadio 610 – the Texans will clinch the AFC South for the third time in five years.
In fact, it’s looking close to impossible for the Colts to overtake the Texans for the division crown. Even if the Broncos win tonight, Indy would still need A LOT of help.
But don’t tell Bill O’Brien that.
“I believe that we have to focus on the Jacksonville Jaguars,” said O’Brien. “Believe me, I understand all those scenarios and all those things. But I think this team has to really do what we’ve tried to do all year. Especially in the last half of the season . . . show up every day and get better. And try to improve. And try to win. And go out there on the game field and win.”
When asked who he was rooting for between the Bengals and Broncos, O’Brien shifted the focus back to Jacksonville.
“I have a lot of respect for Marvin [Lewis] and the Bengals,” said O’Brien. I have a lot of respect for Gary Kubiak and the Denver Broncos too. So I’m sure it’ll be a great game. But again, I’m in there watching the Jaguars.”
“I’m not trying to pull the wool over your eyes at all on that,” continued O’Brien. “We’re just really focused on Jacksonville. I believe that Jacksonville is a very good football team. I don’t care what their record is. They’re much improved. Offensively they’ve got a lot of weapons. They’ve got a really good young quarterback. Defensively a lot of speed. [They’re] good on special teams. So it’s going to be a big challenge for our football team.”
Should the Texans clinch a spot Monday night, their mindset might change. Rest for some of their banged up players – like quarterback Brian Hoyer, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, tackle Duane Brown, and center Ben Jones – might become the priority. But for now, O’Brien and company only have one goal.
“I think the most important thing is to win,” said O’Brien. “I don’t think there’s any substitute for winning.”
