Houston (CBS Houston) – The Houston Cougars resume is getting more and more accolades as the season has progressed. This past Saturday they added a 33-30 win over the Cincinnati Bearkats to that resume to move the Cougars to 9-0.

This Saturday at home, they will have its toughest challenge to their undefeated season so far.

The now 8-1 Memphis Tigers who had just been recently ranked number 13 in the country in the college football rankings just suffered their first loss of the season to Navy.

The Cougars if they want any chance at making to the College football playoffs need to beat a team that will come to Houston looking to prove something.

“Definitely,” Cougars linebacker Steven Taylor said when asked if they expect an even hungrier Tigers team this Saturday.

The Cougars hands will already be full trying to contain the Tigers quarterback Paxton Lynch a potential first round draft pick in the NFL. But now they have to worry about Lynch who will be looking to show he is not slowing down.

The last two games Lynch has played he has had his two lowest adjusted quarterback rating numbers of the year with both games in the mid 60’s.

Still the 6’7, 245-pound quarterback is a monster the Cougars will have to conquer.

“Big physical quarterback that can read the football field really good,” Taylor said “he’s a very mobile quarterback, he’s not scared to get dirty and he’s also an incredible thrower,”

The Cougars just recently faced a different type of monster in Bearkats quarterback Gunner Kiel.

While Kiel is no 6’7 massive human being behind center, he is a gunslinger. Kiel was able to hang over 500 yards passing on the Cougars defense.

“Out of the frying pan into the fire,” head coach Tom Herman said of back to back weeks facing dynamic quarterbacks “I don’t know of a two-week stretch in the country where you’re going to face two QB’s with that much talent,”

And while the Kiel threw for over 500 yards and even had a chance to win the game with a final drive. The Cougars defense stopped Kiel when they had absolutely had to.

So while Lynch is coming to town having put up plenty of video game numbers himself. The Cougars know that not only can they win a close game, they can also get a stop when their backs are against the wall.
