Having a background in the social sciences means that you have a better understanding of how people think and what to expect from your interactions with them. This can help you provide an excellent customer service experience.

Brittany Rodgers, Owner of Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, talks about her career as a business owner, while using the skills she learned from studying psychology. She received her bachelor’s in general studies at Indiana University with a concentration in both psychology and radiology.

What does your current job entail?
“I am a multi-unit franchisee of Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. My husband and I own four locations in the North Houston, TX region. We currently have well over 100 employees between our four locations and being a successful owner of any business entails that you are able to balance a healthy amount of respect and responsibility, dedicated to the wellbeing of not only your clientele but also your employees. One must be multi-faceted, extremely patient, detailed and focus driven. We are always looking for quality massage therapists, estheticians and spa associates, and much of what I do involves finding and training our talented employees.”
What is your favorite part of your daily duties?
“Motivation and training are the daily tasks that I enjoy most. My favorite part of my daily duties is being able to empower my employees to be their best and watching those who may never have had an opportunity previously to better themselves professional, grow and exceed [not only our] expectations, but their own. We see this type of growth on a regular basis and it is the foundation for our business group which pours over into our excellent customer service and spa guest interactions.”
Do you have any advice for people wanting to pursue a similar career?
“Nothing can prepare you for what it is like to own your own business except for the experience of already owning your own business. Just like anything in life, you’re best prepared once you’ve experienced a similar responsibility or have the determination and will to make it happen on any level.”
