In “The B-Straw and Pauly G Bracket”, Paul Gallant and Brien Straw create tournaments – in the world of sports and beyond – where only one can prevail. They accept listener and reader nominations every week, announcing the topic every Monday at 9 PM CT on “B-Straw and Pauly G”.
The Texans and the Redskins got into a bit of a scuffle this weekend.
It served as inspiration for this week’s Bracket.
I know that sports are supposed to be decided by touchdowns, baskets, and runs. But there’s an awful lot of testosterone out there too. And all it takes is one little spark to start a brawl.
[Note: Invading another country is probably more than a “little” spark, Maximus.]
On Friday, we’ll try to figure out which of the below was the rumble of all rumbles.
* Note: Hockey player on Hockey player brawls don’t count. Because there are way too many.
And I’m way too lazy.
1. “You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked!“
It began as a meaningless game between two programs outside the top 25. It ended as the lead story on SportsCenter.
All in all, this fracas resulted in 13 ejections (8 from FIU, 5 from Miami) and 31 1 game suspensions (18 from FIU, 13 from Miami). But the best part? Former Miami wide receiver Lamar Thomas – a color commentator for the game on Comcast Sports Southeast – delivered a legendary rant on the air.
“Now, that’s what I’m talking about. You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked. You don’t come into the OB [Orange Bowl] playing that stuff. You’re across the ocean over there. You’re across the city. You can’t come over to our place talking noise like that. You’ll get your butt beat. I was about to go down the elevator to get in that thing…I say, why don’t we meet outside in the tunnel after the ball game and get it on some more? You don’t come into the OB, baby. We’ve had a down couple of years but you don’t come in here talking smack. Not in our house.”
The U” ‘gonna “The U”.
2. “The Malice at the Palace”
Boy. That escalated quickly. I mean that really got out of hand fast!
Ron Artest didn’t kill a guy. But he did get suspended for the remaining 73 games of the regular season . . . and then another 13 playoff games. Artest would go on to play until 2011, when he mysteriously vanished and was never seen again.
PS – Kidding, he just changed his name to “Metta World Peace”. Yes.
3. Old Man Ryan V Young Whippersnapper Ventura
Wild guess: That didn’t quite go like Ventura – 26 at the time – thought it would. Ryan was 46.
4. Pedro Martinez V The World
Hey, remember the time Pedro threw at Reggie Sanders in the middle of a perfect game? That was awesome.
Hey, remember the time Pedro charged the mound himself? That was awesome.
Hey, remember the time Pedro threw down an elderly coach? That was . . . yeah it was still kind of awesome.
5. World War 3
You know sh*t got real when it gets the Taiwanese animation treatment.
6. The 1998 Orioles V The 1998 Yankees
Not only did this brawl find its way back into the dugout, it featured a rare
crazy Darryl Strawberry appearance!
7. The 1979 Bruins V Madison Square Garden
It started as a brawl between the Bruins and Rangers . . .
“But Paul, I thought you said that doesn’t count!”
And it didn’t count . . . until the Bruins decided to go into the stands. And Mike Milbury – now a broadcaster for NBA – beat a fan with his own shoe. Yup.
8. The 1986 Bears V 1986 Cardinals
This one’s unheralded. And only 4 players were ejected. But a whopping 51 guys got fined for this throwdown!
