HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans will face the San Francisco 49ers for their first preseason game at NRG Stadium on Saturday. Who will be under center as the team’s starting quarterback is still an unknown even after the release of the unofficial depth chart. Brian Hoyer OR Ryan Mallett is the team’s starting QB.
Bill O’Brien would not disclose if he has made a decision on who will start for the Texans against San Francisco at his press conference on Tuesday.
“Both guys will play, all three guys will play in the game. Do not read too much into who’s starting that game,” O’Brien said. “They’re smart, they’re good quarterbacks, and like I said, like I’ve said from day one, one guy will start and the other guy will back up the start, and we’ll go from there.”
On the “unofficial depth chart” released to the media under quarterback it indicates “Brian Hoyer OR Ryan Mallett” it is expected that both quarterbacks will see equal time on the field. Tom Savage as expected is listed as third string.
Veteran wideout Nate Washington was expected to be opposite DeAndre Hopkins as the team’s second wideout, but Cecil Shorts III is currently listed as the second starting wideout on the unofficial depth chart. Washington and Alan Bonner are listed as the primary back-up wideouts.
Despite plenty of reps with the first team, Jeff Adams is currently listed as the primary back-up on the left side of the offensive line. Xavier Su’a-Filo is listed as the team’s starting left guard.
With the injury to Arian Foster, Alfred Blue is listed as the team’s starting running back with Jonathan Grimes is the back-up, followed by Chris Polk and rookie Kenny Hilliard.
On defense Stevie Brown is listed as the team’s staring strong safety with veteran Rahim Moore as the free safety. Andre Hal and Lonnie Ballentine are their respective back-ups.
All rookies are at the bottom of the depth chart at their respective positions. The only exception is Chandler Worthy, the rookie wide-out from Troy, is listed as the starting return man on kickoffs. The punt returner is Alan Bonner.
The unofficial depth chart for the first preseason game is below.
