>>>The Texans had their first practice open to the media since returning from Virginia on Tuesday, but Bill O’Brien said the team had a scrimmage in the bubble on Monday night
>>>Jonathan Grimes, Lonnie Ballentine, Jadeveon Clowney, and Ryan Griffin did not practice. It was just a day off for Grimes. Chris Polk, Jeoffrey Pagan and Louis Nix III were back on the field. O’Brien said he expects Ballentine to return tomorrow.
>>>Hard Knocks debuts tonight. Bill O’Brien got to preview the show.
“I called my parents and asked them not to watch it,” Bill O’Brien said. “Especially my mother, she’s Irish Catholic and she goes to mass I think everyday and (she’s) not going to be very happy with me.”
Both Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer said they won’t watch Hard Knocks tonight.
>>>Today was one of the Texans more physical practices. They were in full pads and hits were aplenty and a lot of in the trenches action.
>>>It was Ryan Mallett’s turn with the first team. He had his ups and downs with a nice pass to Nate Washington in 11 on 11 drills. He also had his passes batted down on back to back plays by J.J. Watt. Bill O’Brien called the competition ‘even’ today and declined to name a starter.
>>>Damaris Johnson is embracing the ‘more you can do’ mantra of Bill O’Brien. The small but speedy Johnson has been playing at a bunch of different positions. Versatility could help him standout in a highly competitive wide receiving core.
>>>Jaelen Strong made a couple of nice catches in 11 on 11 drills in the first part of practice, but consistency is an issue with him. At a later point in practice, Bill O’Brien was not happy with a route the rookie wide receiver ran.
>>>Louis Nix III received some of his most significant practice reps since joining the team. The former third round pick has struggled to stay on the field and was asked if he felt behind.
“Behind? No,” Nix said. “I’m just trying to learn everyday because there’s always something you can learn. Going through this football process, you can’t be perfect. I’m just trying to the best I can.”
