Here are the notes, quotes, and need-to-know information from day three of Texans training camp.

>>>Lonnie Ballentine didn’t practice today and Akeem Dent and Jadeveon Clowney remain on the PUP list. Louis Nix left practice as did Jeoffrey Pagan and Chris Polk. Looked like a knee issue for Pagan and a hamstring for Polk.

>>>Brian Hoyer was the first team quarterback today while Ryan Mallett had a few reps but spent most of his time with the second unit. Mallett looked better than Hoyer today but again neither were outstanding. Hoyer struggles with timing as he sometimes takes a long time to make a decision. He had a few errant throws in 7-on-7 drills.

“Eventually I will tell you who it is,” O’Brien said about the quarterback position. “I am not going to keep it a secret. When we are ready to make a decision, I will tell you who it is.”

>>>Arian Foster was dressed and did light work but didn’t do much team stuff. O’Brien noted he said they would be monitoring Foster and said today was about that.

>>>Today was the first day in pads for the team and there was plenty of hitting. Safeties Rahim Moore and Eddie Pleasant love to mix it up. Rookie linebacker Benardrick McKinney flourished in goal line drills with plenty of big hits.

>>>Vince Wilfork has been the talk of the defensive line as he should be but the offensive line’s Ben Jones won the rounds today. In individual drills Jones more than held his own against the nose tackle. He tried to downplay it after and noted Wilfork is making the rest of the line better.

>>>Whitney Mercilus was doing it all today. He broke up a pass in coverage when it looked like he had been beat. He was rushing the quarterback well and attacking on the run. He rushed one play and drove Derek Newton all the way into Ryan Mallett to end a play.

>>>Jeff Adams continues to get the first team reps at left guard, but Bill O’Brien said he ‘believes’ in Xavier Su’a-Filo.

>>>The slot wide receiver position will be an interesting battle. Cecil Shorts, Alan Bonner, and Damaris Johnson all made good plays out of that spot tonight. Shorts is the first team slot when the team has three wide receivers.

>>>Kevin Johnson stepped in front of a Ryan Mallett pass intended for Jaelen Strong. Benardrick McKinney blasted fullback Jay Prosch causing a red zone fumble. Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage each had trouble corralling a snap from backup center Greg Mancz.

>>>Jay Prosch may be more of an option to run the ball this year. He was given multiple touches today including some goal line carries in 11 on 11 drills.

>>>The players have an off day tomorrow before a short practice Wednesday. They then head East for their joint practices with the Washington Redskins.
