Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Astros newest pitcher already took home his first award while playing for his hometown team. Scott Kazmir was named A.L. Pitcher of the month for July on Monday.
Kazmir, who joined the Astros after a trade with the Oakland A’s on July 23rd, went 2-0 with a 0.26 ERA in five starts between the two clubs. He only gave up one earned run in 34 innings pitched for the month.
Kazmir’s month was historic, as he posted the third-lowest ERA in July in Major League history (min. 25 IP). The only two to top Kazmir’s month were Spud Chandler (0.24) for the New York Yankees in 1941 and Frank Allen (0.25) for the Boston Braves in 1916. Ranking fourth on that list is Clayton Kershaw, who posted a 0.27 ERA (1ER/33IP) last month.
This is the third Pitcher of the Month award the Astros have taken home in 2015. Dallas Keuchel won for both April and May this year.
