Working in a service industry means that customer satisfaction and interacting with your clients is a very regular practice. If you enjoy interacting with many various types of people, this may be a good career for you. Darren Frerking talks about his career in business.

What does your current job entail?

City Wide Maintenance of Houston helps to streamline the management of commercial facilities through coordinating more than 25 services through a network of service providers. This includes regular cleaning like floor care and window washing, as well as maintenance and providing janitorial supplies and other needs as they arise. Because we are in charge of care of the facilities, this helps the building owners and property managers to free up their time for their own work, rather than them having to select a vendor for each of these services.”

What is your favorite part of your daily duties?

“I find deep satisfaction in meeting the needs of our clients. Whether its managing a window cleaning for a nearby office building or handling the parking lot resurfacing for a church, school or community center, every job helps bring our business closer to the communities we serve. I especially enjoy sitting down with new and prospective clients to understand their needs and share more about how we can help. The face-to-face interaction is an important and rewarding aspect of my job.”

Do you feel your education prepared you for your current role?

“My background and education have been essential in preparing me for my current role with City Wide Maintenance of Houston. In my prior role as a sales director, I was committed to helping businesses find solutions to their problems. Now, I have the opportunity to help business owners, property managers and facility service managers find a solution to their cleaning and building maintenance needs.”

Have you participated in any form of continuing education?

“I have been focused on sharpening my business acumen through various national sales courses. To date, I have completed programs with Acclivus, which is committed to enhancing the performance of sales, support, and service professionals and executives in a range of industries. In addition, I have completed Carew International’s most popular sales training program, Dimensions of Professional Selling (DPS). I am also trained in using the S.T.A.R. interviewing response technique for success in behavioral job interviews and the Blanchard Situational Leadership technique, which is recognized as both a business language and a framework for employee development.”
