ODESSA, Texas (AP) — A West Texas homeowner wants to know why police shot his dog after the pet apparently lunged at two officers in an incident captured on patrol car video.

Odessa police Sgt. Pete Gonzalez says the dog was shot Wednesday while approaching officers in an aggressive manner. The officers were outside a house responding to a security alarm.

Gonzalez says the two officers defended themselves by shooting the dog, which survived.

The 2-year-old Labrador retriever named Smoke was taken to a veterinarian for treatment of jaw and leg wounds.

Owner Cory Brooks says police should not use lethal force on a dog. Brooks says Smoke was defending the family’s home.

The dog is heard barking on the video. The officers are seen back away from the animal before opening fire.
