SLIDELL, La. (CBS Houston) — Questions are being raised after a cellphone photo was captured of a dog following its owner after being abandoned at a Louisiana gas station.

WDSU reports that an animal lover and other witnesses saw the abandoned canine desperately running after its owner in a vehicle. Louisiana Humane Society is looking to find the owner.

The primary witness, Lorie Hollis, told the Humane Society that the owner appeared to be a man in an old blue and white pickup and that he intentionally left the dog and sped away. When the local animal control office was called to the site the dog was nowhere to be found.

Witnesses say the dog was a black German shepherd mix and had a small patch of brown under its neck.

The Human Society released information claiming the owner abandoned the dog saying, “Go! Go over there!”

“Appearing confused, the dog jumped up and put his paws on top of the tail-gate. The truck sped away, leaving the dog behind,” Hollis told the Humane Society, as reported by WDSU. “The dog tried desperately to keep up with the truck as it sped away down the road. I got into my car and proceeded to follow as best I could.”

After tracking the dog and truck for a few miles, Hollis says she lost site.

Jeff Dorson with the Humane Society says the cowardly and cruel act is unfortunately not rare among irresponsible pet-owners who may feel they can no longer care for a pet.

“All they have to do is surrender him or her to a nearby rescue group or shelter, rather than abandon the poor animal at some random location, where their chances of survival are almost zero. This is truly a cowardly act and a punishable offense,” Dorson told WDSU.

The Humane Society is hoping to arrest and convict the owner and find the missing dog.  They are offering a $250 reward for leads. In the meantime, the Human Society has also asked volunteers to search for the dog in the area and call 888-6-humane if the animal is found.
