HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Saturday marks the first of three games the Rockets will be honoring Lunar New Year with special jerseys.

You can say the players are excited to see the new designs featuring Chinese characters that they’ll be sporting.

“It’s amazing,” Kostas Papanikolaou said. “I mean, everybody got excited. When we looked in here and everybody saw the jerseys, everybody was like, ‘Oh, it’s something different. It’s something nice.’

“It’s exciting. I think it’s a very nice move, you know?”

The design features two Chinese characters meaning “Rockets” in Chinese. The second Chinese character features the three lines coming out the bottom of it typically seen from the “R” of the Rockets logo. There is also a gold patch on the left sleeve.

“Most of (the players) like the sleeves, that’s the thing, you know?” Papanikolaou said. “But I think it’s nice because everyone can see how global the NBA can get.”

Donatas Motiejunas is a fan of the Chinese characters on his jersey.

“The letters, they’re just different.” he said. “It just overall looks like a fun uniform. For me, it’s going to be my first time wearing it during a game, so I’m looking forward to it.”

The Rockets will wear the special Lunar New Year jerseys starting Saturday night against the Raptors, followed by games Monday against the Timberwolves and then Wednesday against the Clippers.
