HOUSTON (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested the 18-year-old boyfriend of a teenage girl found dead last year in a Houston hotel room hours after her prom.
Police said in a statement Thursday that Eddie M. Herrera is charged with aggravated assault in the May death of 17-year-old Jacqueline Gomez of Houston.
Investigators say Herrera told authorities the two went to the hotel room after attending the prom, drank alcohol and fell asleep. He said he found Gomez unresponsive the following morning.
Authorities say a further investigation led them to arrest Herrera on Wednesday and they say he admitted to choking Gomez.
The motive and official cause of death remain under investigation.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Herrera has a lawyer or whether he remained in custody Thursday.
