Lewis could be the man at QB if Savage can't playBy Cody Stoots

Houston (CBS Houston) – A few weeks after signing with the Texans to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage, quarterback Thad Lewis is suddenly in the hunt to start for the team.

With the status of Tom Savage uncertain and the season of Ryan Fitzpatrick being finished due to a broken leg, Lewis is the lone healthy quarterback officially on the roster.

If Savage can’t play, he was seemingly injured late in the game with the Colts, Lewis will likely compete with the soon-to-be-officially signed Case Keenum for the starting spot on the team.

“No question,” was the response from the fifth-year veteran when he was asked if he thought he could run the offense.

Lewis has already picked up parts off the offense he didn’t know or understand since he was signed.

“A lot better than I was when I first got here,” Lewis said when he was asked his level of comfort in the offense. “Good enough to understand the basics [of the offense.]

“I know enough where I can get out there, and operate, and be efficient.”

Lewis has played in seven games in his NFL career. He has thrown five touchdowns and four interceptions while passing for almost 1,300 yards. For his career he is completing almost 61 percent of his passes. He has played for the Browns in 2012 and last year for the Bills.

Lewis doesn’t know if he is the starter but is anxious to find out who gets the nod.

“I actually don’t know anything,” he said. “I’m actually like you guys – just waiting, and trying to find out.
“At the end of the day you can only control what you can control – and that’s just try to be ready and whatever the coach’s decision, roll with that.”
He also said whoever the quarterback ended up being the coaching staff would scheme around how much the starter knows in the offense.
