The Texans safety is back to normal and ready for the BillsBy Cody Stoots

Houston (CBS Houston) – Speed kills and D.J. Swearinger knows Sunday he needs to avoid being a causality of an impressive Bills offense if the Texans want to win.

“They got a lot of weapons, a lot of speed,” Swearinger said.

He said the Bills have the most speed the Texans have faced all year, and he might be right.

Buffalo’s rookie receiver Sammy Watkins ran his 40 yard dash at the combine earlier this year in 4.43 seconds. Bill’s running back C.J. Spiller ran his in 4.37 seconds and has been clocked as fast as 4.27 seconds. The signal caller for the Texans’ opponents on Sunday, E.J. Manuel, dazzled with his speed for the quarterback position turning in a 4.59 40 yard dash.

So how do the Texans go about preparing for the Bills impressive athleticism? Swearinger knows it’s all about preparation.

“Just got to know where they are at,” he said. “Know where they’re at before the play. Film study helps you with that with what they’re going to do in certain formations. You’ve got to know their formation, know their personnel, and call out things before they happen.”

Swearinger said he is aware he will sometimes be the last line of defense against short passes to the speedy players. He again said the Texans’ reads pre-snap as well as their communication will be key to slowing down the Bills offense.

He said the team is back after being down on their tough loss. He said they hope to implement their same formula they used to win the first two games to bounce back from their first loss.

It helps that Swearinger says his elbow, which he injured against Oakland, feels much better than when he played in New York against the Giants.

“Tremendously better,” he said when asked how much better his elbow felt. “I’ll be back to myself. Last week I was a little off.”

He said he feels much more comfortable with his elbow brace and expects no trouble from it this weekend.

Speed may kill, but the Texans hope on Sunday when they host the Bills, D.J. Swearinger is the right man to slow down Buffalo.
