Houston (CBS Houston) – The Houston Texans could be without their future hall of fame punter on Sunday when they take on the Bills.
Shane Lechler said he hasn’t practiced with his hip flexor injury, which occured Sunday when his punt was blocked by the Giants. He also said he doesn’t know what Sunday holds for him.
“I’m not sure,” Lechler said on if he could play if the game was tonight. “I haven’t done anything to test it. I’m just trying to give it some rest and some healing time,” he continued.
He also said it isn’t his choice if he plays Sunday.
“That’s up to Bill (O’Brien) and Rick (Smith) and everybody here,” Lechler said. He added he is “doing what he can to get ready.”
The Texans have no other punters on their current 53-man roster. Earlier this week the team signed former Rice kicker and punter Chris Boswell to the practice squad. Boswell shared punting reps with Lechler in the preseason.
Boswell punted 15 times this preseason for an average just over 44 yards per punt. Lechler has an average of almost 51 yards per punt so far this season.
Lechler says he doesn’t know when he will get to test out his injury.
“I’m not going to rush it,” he said. “If I’m ready, I’m ready.”
