Houston (CBS Houston) – Louis Nix III was drafted to anchor Romeo Crennel’s 3-4 defense, but the third round pick won’t play a single snap in his rookie season.

On Wednesday Nix was placed on injured reserve ending his season. The Texans traded back into the third round to get him, but since arriving from Notre Dame Bill O’Brien has been publicly critical of Nix.

“He’s still got a ways to go, but he’s getting better,” Bill O’Brien said Monday. “He works hard after practice. I believe he wants to be good, but he’s got a ways to go.”

Nix had offseason knee surgery and had been inactive for all three of the Texans regular season games.

With the added roster spot, the Texans signed former Green Bay Packer DT Ryan Pickett. Pickett, 34, was a first round pick of the Rams in 2001. He spent five years in St. Louis and the last eight seasons in Green Bay.
