STILLWATER, Okla. (CBS Houston) – For the first time in its history, Oklahoma State University is requiring all students to take an online course about sexually assault and prevention, reports KOCO-TV.

Students must complete the 45 minute course before being allowed to enroll in their Fall semester classes.

The announcement comes months after the federal government announced OSU was one of several universities under review for its handling of sexual assault allegations.

Dr. Lee Bird, OSU’s vice president of student affairs, said the program is designed to give a quick but detailed overview of the university’s policies. “It’s a pretty quick way to get all the information they need, or much information they need, about sexual violence prevention, sexual harassment,” he said. “That is required by the federal mandate.”

Nadir Nibras, president of an OSU sexual assault prevention club, said he considers the online program a step in the right direction. “Ideally, it would be this program online and more follow up programs throughout the year such as a workshop that focuses on healthy sexuality and healthy relationships between students,” he added.

Students like Lindsay Gabler said the online program has helped her identify the warning signs of dating violence. “If I see that, you know, with one of my friends in their relationships I’ll re-think back to this time and say ‘that’s not right, I should probably ask her about that,'” Gabler told the station.
