Houston (CBS Houston) – We in the media, nationally and locally, have held countless mock drafts and that includes we here at Sportsradio 610. Lengthy discussions have been conducted for months regarding what the Texans should do or the player they should select with the first pick. Quite frankly draft talk has dominated television and radio for months to the delight of many, especially the NFL, and will until the 2014 season starts.

Listeners to countless radio stations, locally and nationally, have voiced their opinions as well since many of them are consumers of the game in one way or another. Those on social media have their opinion polls. Here locally, bold listeners had a chance to get even more involved.

Partner, co-host, and bright-idea guy, Patrick Creighton, devised a great strategy which allowed callers to play General Manager for a day last Saturday and Sunday during the Nate&Creight Show on Sportsradio 610. The game is still underway on twitter. However, the rabid involvement of all speaks to the crazed interest in Pro Football, the Texans, and the decision the media and fans think the Texans should or will make concerning the first pick of this year’s NFL Draft.

It happens! Sometimes a player’s name is called by the NFL Commissioner that many don’t know or expect to hear. That could that be the case on the night of May 8th especially for Houston Texans fans.

Pro Days came and went and the drama that came with each one seemed to climax more and more and key indecisiveness. There was the Johnny Manziel Pro Day, event, that catapulted the former Texas A&M quarterback to the forefront of many minds until Jadeveon Clowney almost made many think twice about the Manziel Pro Day.

Teams are now scheduling independent visits for those players at the top of the draft chain in which they have interests. The Texans have scheduled visits this month with quarterbacks Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel.

But, we must keep in mind, that these are just visits. So much can happen between now and May 8th which will affect the draft. But, you don’t care about that right? Your concern is which player the Texans will take with the first pick, that is, if they don’t trade down!

The question is will the Texans deliver shock and awe or just shock factor on NFL Draft night? The prevailing opinion is they should get this right. It comes down to what is right for the Texans. It was difficult to determine the direction of Rick Smith and former Head Coach Gary Kubiak. It will be even more difficult to determine the direction of General Manager Rick Smith and new Head Coach Bill O’Brien.

The Texans have been very quiet about their plans, almost mouse-like. The only statement O’Brien has made so far referred to the possibility of drafting two quarterbacks. We think we have a good idea of their draft needs; quarterback or two, offensive tackle, difference maker on defense, or maybe two. That’s really as much as we think we know.

So, given that bit of supposed knowledge, what announcement do you expect to hear from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on the night of May 8th? If you heard this statement, would you be shocked? With the first pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans are making a trade. You’re still sitting on the edge of your seat until you hear the trade.

Or, what if Commissioner Goodell announces this! With the first pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select Blake Bortles, quarterback, Central Forida! Would you be shocked and awed, or just shocked? Most believe his future is bright!

Is this what Texans fans want to hear? With the first pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select Johnny Manziel, quarterback, Texas A&M! Does this announcement bring a smile to your face? We have a couple of others for you; just not sure if they will bring a smile, shock, or awe.

With the first pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select, Khalil Mack, linebacker, Buffalo! Would you be shocked? He’s a great player!

Here’s one more! With the first pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select, Jadeveon Clowney, defensive end, South Carolina! What does that do for you?

So, the first pick is over and done! However, until the Texans select a quarterback, we’re all still on the edge of our seats. They are going to draft a quarterback, right? That is what Head Coach Bill O’Brien stated.

The draft is now less than a month away and anticipation builds.

Hope you don’t mind waiting.
