DALLAS (AP) — Dallas police have increased their social media presence to keep the public updated on fighting crime, encourage tips and reach out to potential recruits.

The Dallas Police Department on Monday announced a new website and plans for more officers to use Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook.

The dpdbeat.com site links users to social media and also features cold cases, contact phone numbers and recruiting information. Police hope the sites will encourage the public to report suspicious activity.

Police Chief David Brown recently told city leaders that social media sites like Twitter are a good way to reach younger people.

Officers are encouraged to use Twitter but are banned from tweeting information considered evidence.
