San Francisco 49ers saftey Donte Whitner will now be known as Donte Hitner. The Pro-Bowl saftey has already begun the process of legally changing his name.
On a conference call with Houston media on Wednesday Whitner discussed the identity turn.
“I actually put the paperwork in yesterday afternoon.” Whitner said. “From here on out, until I retire I will be known as ‘Donte Hitner’ without the ‘W’.”
Hitner tweeted that he asked his mom first if it was okay to change his name.
Around the San Francisco Bay Area fans refer to the big hitting saftey as Hitner and so Hitner decided to go with what the fans call him.
“Everything we do is for the fans right? It’s all entertainment,” Whitner told 49ers.com. “We all understand that. It’s entertainment, but that’s what I do, it’s my game. Along with some things that happened recently, that’s why I went with it.”
Hitner is not the first player to legally change his name, but he points out he only modified his last name. He did not create an entirely new name like Chad Ochocino or Meta World Peace.
“I think one word is not as big as 10 words,” Whitner said. “It’s my last name and removing a letter makes it pretty cool.”
No word on if the 49ers will have a new nameplate on the back of the jersey yet for Sunday Night’s showdown against the Houston Texans.
