Whether you want something to keep your kids busy this summer or they want a year-round activity, dance classes are always a good option. Kids naturally want to move their bodies, and dance classes give them that chance while teaching them about music, rhythm and learning techniques. Check out some of the many dance classes around Houston that are geared especially towards kids.

Houston Dance Works
3500 E. TC Jester Blvd., Suite G
Houston, TX 77018

Houston Dance Works has classes for moms and their kids. This school offers not only ballet and jazz, but also hip-hop, tap, drill team and cheer dancing lessons. This is a good dance school for children who do not want the pressure of competitive dance but still want to perform. Houston Dance Works hosts an annual recital displaying the efforts of its students over the previous year. Regular dance lessons are available for children from three years old through teenagers, but for very little ones who are between 18 months and three years of age, this studio hosts Mommy and Me dance classes.

Two years ago, in 2012, the Houston Dance Factory was named by the Houston Press as Houston’s best dance studio. The prices for kids’ classes start at $50 and go up from there, but you can choose from several types of dance for both boys and girls. Included in the dance menu at the Houston Dance Factory are classes in ballet, salsa and hip-hop. Toddlers can also take their own hip-hop or ballet classes. Children’s dance classes last 45 minutes and are offered at various times throughout the week. For first-time participants, the studio requires a $25 registration fee.

Claire School of Dance
Heights Christian Church

Children who are ages 2.5 and up can be a part of one of the many classes offered at the Claire School of Dance. This school offers a more traditional selection of ballet, tap and modern dance. Toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy pre-ballet and creative movement classes. The techniques learned at the Claire School of Dance have helped some former students successfully audition and become accepted into the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) and the Houston Ballet Academy. Parents may enroll their children in either summer camps or year-round classes. What makes this dance studio unique is that it offers birthday parties with fairy princess crowns for all of the guests and a special crown and tutu for the birthday girl. The party includes a creative movement class that lasts up to 45 minutes and access to the party room for cutting your provided cake and opening presents.
