Since 1975, the University of Houston Theatre Department has collaborated with local artists to put on the Houston Shakespeare Festival, two weeks of plays performed under the stars at Miller Outdoor Theatre. This year, the festival will be producing “Antony and Cleopatra” and “As You Like It” on alternating evenings in August to balance the comedy with the tragedy. You won’t want to miss either of these productions, which are performed as close to the style of the original Globe Theatre productions as possible, while still using the conveniences of modern technology. According to  Shakespeare Companies and Festivals: An International Guide, the Houston Shakespeare Festival boasts “audiences among the most ethnically diverse of any Shakespeare Festival in the country.” Don’t miss out on this fun and free event from August 2-11!

The Humphreys School of Musical Theatre’s show for the summer of 2013 will be Disney’s High School Musical, based on the record-breaking, famous Disney Channel movie. It’s the first day of the spring semester and all of the students have come back to their friends and their cliques, when basketball star and school jock Troy discovers Gabriela, the girl he met over winter break, has enrolled at his school. What will happen when she convinces him to join her in trying out for the school musical? Will he still be the coolest kid around, or will he have to learn to make new friends — or both? Performed by the TUTS Humphreys School students, this will be a great family show! It is free and runs June from 12 to 15.
