If you’re craving the perfect burger, H-Town is the place to be. The best burgers in Houston are sure to make your mouth water. There are so many fabulous burger joints here, in fact, that it’s difficult to pick just a few, but we’ve done our best. — Amber Hilton

The Hubcap Grill

1111 Prairie
Houston, TX 77002
(713) 223-5885

Walking into The Hubcap Grill, you might not expect to get amazing food. This place looks like a dive, with a very old-fashioned diner feel. The vinyl-covered seats even have holes where the stuffing is coming out. However, when it comes to a good burger, sometimes it’s these dive-type places that really know how to deliver. What makes the burgers here so amazing is the hand-formed, 100% fresh chuck beef patties, which are placed on homemade toasted buns and served up with plenty of fresh toppings and homemade fresh cut fries. Some of the specialties here include the Quadruple Heart Clogger, which features grilled wiener, chili, bacon and cheese, and the Frito Pie Burger, which is topped with chili, cheese, grilled onions, jalapes, and Frito Lay chips. The more adventurous burger connoisseur might try the Sticky Burger, topped with bacon, American cheese and peanut butter – that’s right – peanut butter! Hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mel’s Country Cafe

24814 Stanolind Road
Tomball, TX 77375
(281) 255-MELS (6357)

If you have time to make the drive to Tomball, a northern suburb of Houston, Mel’s Country Caf・will make it well worth your while. This small-town caf・serves up big taste at great prices, making it one of the best burger joints in the Houston area. Established in 1994, Mel’s is locally owned and operated and beloved by the locals. Nestled in what seems like the middle of nowhere, you would think Mel’s would have a hard time attracting customers, but word of mouth travels fast and far when it comes to good burgers, and it’s not uncommon to have to wait on Mel’s porch for a table. If you’ve really worked up an appetite, you might try the Mega Mel Challenge. You’ll get your name on the wall if you can consume a Mega Mel Burger in two hours, which includes 1.5 pounds of fresh ground beef, one pound of bacon, a quarter pound of American cheese, and plenty of lettuce, onions, tomatoes and pickles – all piled high on a hamburger bun. Hours: Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Closed on Mondays.

Southwell’s Hamburger Grill

5860 San Felipe Street, #F
Houston, TX 77057
(713) 789-4972
Southwells Hamburger Grill on Facebook

Another Houston burger joint with a laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere, Southwell’s definitely serves up some of the best burgers in Houston. Southwell’s is best known for their tasty old-fashioned burgers, but their waffle fries, onion rings and shakes are to die for as well. It’s hard to pass up the burgers here, but if you can, you’ll want to try the Chicken Supreme sandwich, which is nearly as popular with the locals as the beef. The only thing we can’t figure out is why a restaurant this popular doesn’t have a website. Hours: Monday through Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
