Food may not be the first thing on your mind when picking out a bar, but after knocking back a few pints you’re bound to be singing a different tune. Whether you prefer to wash it down with an ale, margarita, glass of wine or cocktail, the best bar food in Houston is worth the trip every time. – Amber Hilton

Downing Street Pub in Houston may have earned its stripes for their unparalleled whiskey selection, extensive wine list and 400-square-foot cigar humidor, but that doesn’t mean that you need to down your single malt scotch on an empty stomach. Downing Street also serves up some of the best bar food in Houston. Among the options here are hearty pub sandwiches and soups, as well as plates of smoked Scottish salmon and rich, imported cheeses. All this can be enjoyed in a relaxing, “casually elegant” atmosphere. A state-of-the-art filtration system helps non-smokers feel at ease among the cigar-smoking patrons. Hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
