Steward had worked since 2001 as a boxing commentator for Time Warner Inc.’s HBO but spent his time training or managing some of the greatest fighters of the past 40 years out of the Kronk Gym in Detroit.

Upon moving and settling in Detroit, Steward began to frequent the Brewster Recreation Center, where Joe Louis and Eddie Futch trained.

While Detroit’s original Kronk Gym was closed by the city in 2006 because of financial problems, Steward opened a new facility under the same name in Oakland County, Michigan in 2009.

Steward is also a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Steward was one of the most successful and influential trainers in boxing history and earned induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.
