Cinco de Mayo is the quintessential Mexican holiday. Celebrating the Mexican military defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo is a time for festive occasions and the day is marked by parties, commemorations, and other events across the United States. Houston, with its large Hispanic population and influence, is one of the best places to be for Cinco de Mayo. These are some of the best events taking place around the Houston area for this first weekend in May, 2017.

Scheduled for 4;30 p.m. on Friday May 5 at the Hotel Derek in the Galleria area, Cinco de Mayo Margarita Throwdown is an excellent way to pay homage to the nation’s most popular mixed drink. This event is a competition of sorts, with teams working to create the most delicious margarita possible. Spectators can sip on a margarita of their choosing while cheering one of the teams to victory. Part of the proceeds go to charity, making the Cinco de Mayo Margarita Throwdown one of the best ways to celebrate the day.

For those who prefer to be in the middle of the action, a good event to attend is Cinco de Mile. This is a block party held in downtown Houston and it is the second annual edition of what is quickly becoming a well- attended and enjoyable event. Participating venues include Capital Bar, Traffic Premium Lounge, Rose Gold Cocktail Den, and Cle Houston Dayclub/Nightclub- four taverns joined together as one for this festive occasion on the streets of downtown.
