The Houston Texans will likely take a quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft. And according to a report from USA Today’s Tom Pelissero the Texans head coach, Bill O’Brien, has his heart set on Texas Tech product Patrick Mahomes.
“A lot of BS flies this time of year, but file this away: One NFL coach who’s done homework on all the top QBs told me the word is O’Brien absolutely loves the cannon-armed Mahomes,” Pelissero writes. “O’Brien wouldn’t be alone — based on conversations I’ve had, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Mahomes is one of the first two quarterbacks taken.”
The Texans currently have two quarterbacks under contract in Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden. Savage will be the likely week one starter as he enters his fourth season with the team but has yet to prove that he can stay healthy when he gets on the field.
The Texans did reportedly bring in Mahomes this week for a private workout with the team.
If Pelissero’s report is correct and multiple teams are interested in the upside of Mahomes, will the Texans be able to figure out a way to get him? They pick 25th overall in the draft and if Mahomes, or Deshaun Watson, who also visited with the team, aren’t there, what does that leave the Texans to do with their first round pick?
The Texans could look to make a trade and move up in the draft if they don’t think one of their desired targets will get to No. 25. Pete Prisco has Mahomes going as high as No. 6 to the Jets in his latest mock draft.
