Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texan have picked up their fifth-year option on former number one overall pick, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, SportsRadio 610’s John McClain is reporting.

Clowney, about to enter his fourth year of his rookie contract is coming off his first full season of play where he was good enough to rack up all-pro and pro bowl honors while leading the Texans defense. This in a year where the Texans were without three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt for 13 games.

The execution of the option doesn’t mean the Texans will not sign Clowney to a long-term deal before that fifth year is up, but it does give the Texans more room on when they need to start those negotiations.
