HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Rice Owls athletic department worked quickly to fill their men’s basketball head coaching vacancy as the school announced Thursday that assistant coach Scott Pera was promoted to be the next head coach of the Owls.

Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard informed the men’s basketball team earlier on Thursday and released a video of the team’s reaction to their official twitter account @Riceathletics

Pera takes over the position vacated Tuesday by Mike Rhoades who left Rice to become the new head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University on Tuesday. The Owls had a 23-12 record in 2016-17 and a post season appearance in the CBI. The 23 wins are the second most in program history.
