HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Rice Owls men’s basketball coach Mike Rhoades will be meeting with officials at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) on Tuesday regarding their head coaching vacancy.

Sources confirmed a report first made by CBS Sports college basketball writer Jon Rothstein.

Rhoades is a former VCU assistant under now Texas head coach Shaka Smart and was Smart’s second in command when the Rams advanced to the Final Four in 2011.

An opening was created at VCU after Will Wade was named the head coach at LSU on Monday.

Rhoades completed his third season as the Rice head coach on Monday when the Owls lost to Utah valley 85-79 in the quarterfinal round of the CBI. The Owls finished the season with a 23-12 record.
