HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – Mike Rhoades is leaving his position as head coach of the Rice Owls men’s basketball team to become the head coach of Virginia Commonwealth University according to sources.

The move was first reported by CBS college basketball analyst Gary Parrish.

Rhoades is a former VCU assistant under now Texas head coach Shaka Smart and was Smart’s second in command when the Rams advanced to the Final Four in 2011.

An opening was created at VCU after Will Wade was named the head coach at LSU on Monday.

Rhoades completed his third season as the Rice head coach on Monday when the Owls lost to Utah valley 85-79 in the quarterfinal round of the CBI. The Owls finished the season with a 23-12 record.
