Astros Make Roster Moves While Pitching Competition Continues

In a spring training devoid of any real position player battles for roster spots, the Astros sent four players to minor league camp Tuesday. Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, infielder’s: Colin Moran, A.J. Reed and Tyler White were all optioned. All four played in the big leagues in 2016.

The remaining competition centers around the fifth starting spot in the rotation. Joe Musgrove threw five innings of two run baseball Monday against St. Louis. Mike Fiers, who has dealt with a minor hamstring injury in camp, authored four scoreless innings Tuesday against the Marlins.

“We feel really good about them (Musgrove and Fiers),” said manager A.J. Hinch. “Both of them are capable. We will see where the health is. We’ve got to clear some hurdles again with McHugh.

“If we go in with one too many starters, I’ll feel really good about it. But I am very, very confident starting the season with any one of those names in the rotation.”
