HUMBLE, TX (CBS HOUSTON) — World No. 1 Dustin Johnson and No. 6 Jordan Spieth both have committed to play in the 2017 Shell Houston Open, March 30-April 2 at the Golf Club of Houston, announced Tournament Director Steve Timms.
Johnson, who recently won the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship and the Genesis Open, has 14 PGA TOUR victories, moving him to the number one spot in the World Golf Rankings. He finished third at the 2016 Shell Houston Open, closing with a 3-under-par 69. Johnson will be making his sixth SHO start.
Two-time Major championship winner Jordan Spieth will make his fifth consecutive appearance at the Shell Houston Open. In 2015, Spieth lost in a three-way playoff with Johnson Wagner and J.B. Holmes and went on to win his first major at the Masters. At 23-years old, Spieth is ranked No. 6 in the World.
Shell Houston Open secured its date before the Masters in 2007. The Golf Club of Houston Tournament Course is set up to emulate the unique playing conditions of Augusta, giving players an opportunity to prepare for Masters competition the following week. Shell Houston Open is the last qualifying opportunity for players not otherwise eligible to gain an invitation to Augusta.
The 2017 Shell Houston Open will be played the week of March 27-April 2 at the Golf Club of Houston Tournament Course. Players have until March 24 (Friday before tournament week) to commit. They may also withdraw on or before that date with no penalty. Tickets and future player information will be available at shellhoustonopen.com.
