Austin (CBS HOUSTON) – University of Texas head coach Tom Herman isn’t worried about his defense at UT, despite not being happy with the shape some of his defensive linemen are in.
“We’ve got to find some defensive linemen,” Herman said. “I’m worried about that group through the winter offseason. They didn’t perform that well.
“The effort, as a group, has not been to our requirements here in this program. The body types, again I think we’d know a lot more if some of these fat guys lost some weight.”
While speaking with the media in Austin before the Longhorns first spring practice Herman talked about the defense and how he hopes the team can turn it around, and his belief in defensive coordinator Todd Orlando who came with Herman from the University of Houston.
“We could go out and practice and make it the best position,” Herman said. “I’ve seen things like that happen. But it is a concern knowing the league we play in. But I also know we’ve got four defensive coaches that are as good as there are in the country; I’ve seen Todd Orlando make chicken salad out of some lesser parts.”
Herman coached the Cougars to a 22-4 record in his two years in Houston. Two players from his 2015 defense were drafted into the NFL and there are a few prospects from Herman’s 2016 team projected to make the NFL this April at the NFL Draft. The 2016 defense ranked 13th in college football at yards per game.
