SAN ANTONIO (CBS HOUSTON) – Kawhi Leonard scored 39 points and denied MVP candidate James Harden’s potential game tying lay-up attempt after hitting a go-ahead three to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a comeback 112-110 victory over the Houston Rockets Monday night at AT&T Center.
The win was the eighth consecutive by the Spurs.
The Rockets built a 16 point lead in the first half but the Spurs didn’t allow Houston to run away with it as they continued to chip away at the Houston lead throughout the second half.
Harden, who matched Leonard’s scoring output with 39 of his own, gave the Rockets a 108-107 lead with a free throw with 39-seconds remaining. On the next Spurs possession Leonard buried a three with Nene’ guarding to give the Spurs the lead 110-108.
Leonard then blocked Harden’s potential game-tying lay-up attempt on the ensuing Rockets possession with just under 19 seconds remaining.
The Rockets failed to foul in the final 10 seconds trailing by two with the Spurs running out the clock.
The Spurs now own the season series win over Houston 3-1. Should the two teams tie in the standings, San Antonio would hold the tie break.
The Rockets return to Toyota Center on Wednesday when they host the Utah Jazz.
