INDIANAPOLIS (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans have an offseason with many questions for where their roster will end up by the start of training camp. General Manager Rick Smith’s job is to fill that roster to the best of his ability. At the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday Smith told reporters he is happy with where the team’s salary cap is.
“I think we’re in good shape, cap-wise,” Smith said. “Chris Olsen, Kevin Krajcovic do a great job of managing our salary cap and negotiating our contracts. I do feel like we’ll be able to do whatever we want.”
The big names for the Texans are free agent cornerback A.J. Bouye and linebacker John Simon. The Texans are also looking to extend wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins who has one year left on his rookie contract.
“I feel pretty good about it,” Smith said. “We’ve had some success at keeping our guys. That’s the way we’ve decided to build our football team is through the draft. We’ve identified our good, young players. It’s not only first-round picks. It’s other players that have performed. I don’t say this lightly about the job that Chris Olsen does in manning our salary cap and putting us in position to have a chance to keep those players.
“That’s a big part of what we do and how we’ve decided to manage our football team. I’m confident. The reality is you can’t keep all your good young players, but the balance of your football team is made up of players that you draft and that core group hopefully of players that you drafted and developed and they are arrow-up type players and you can get those players under contract long term and continue to build your football team.”
Specifically, on Hopkins, Smith wouldn’t get specific on when the team would try to get a deal done with the top wide receiver.
“Our goal is to keep all of our good, young players and DeAndre is a good, young player,” Smith said. “So, yes. We are absolutely intent on resigning him. When that happens is up for debate, but he’s definitely in our plans. He’s an excellent young football player and I think he’s one of those guys that we just talked about that’s an arrow-up player. We certainly want to continue to build around him.”
