INDIANAPOLIS (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans are in the thick of a busy offseason ahead of the fourth year in the Bill O’Brien era in 2017. The Texans brass is in Indianapolis for the NFL combine, but has a lot on their minds outside the draft as cornerback AJ Bouye approaches free agency and questions that linger about the Houston quarterback situation.
For a few days, the Texans will focus strictly on the April draft and some one-on-one attention on the top 2017 prospects.
O’Brien is looking forward to all of the physical challenges that take place at the combine, but was quick to point out that the most important information is obtained off the field.
“The most important parts of the combine are the interviews at night and the medical reports,” O’Brien told reporters at his media session Thursday. “The on-field stuff I think is good, but they’re not wearing pads, the quarterbacks aren’t facing a rush. There’s some things you can take from the on-field stuff.”
Outside of the combine, the main player news surrounding the Texans offseason has been surrounding the future of AJ Bouye. The team elected to not place the franchise tag on Bouye and will work on a long term deal with the breakout secondary star ahead of free agency.
“We really want (Bouye) back,” O’Brien said. “We realize that free agency and things like that – we understand the process of how it all works. Hopefully we can get him back before free agency starts but if it doesn’t, we’ll continue I know to work hard to try to get him back on our team.”
