610 Email Battle: Gallant Vs. Stoots – Texans Next QB

On Wednesday the boss at SportsRadio 610 sent out a little e-mail with a link to an article saying one NFL Executive said Cal’s Davis Webb will be the best QB in 2017 draft class.  Typically these emails are met with little exuberance or thought (and probably not even read sometimes. Who has time to read an e-mail from the boss!? AMIRITE!?). But this e-mail became a very heated debate between In The Loop’s Cody Stoots (@Cody_Stoots) and the namesake for Gallant at Night, Paul Gallant (@GallantSays).  What followed was a back and forth between the two on what the Houston Texans should do with their next Quarterback.  A series of e-mails, that the rest of us were for some reason left on, were exchanged through the day on Thursday.  Here is the entire exchange between the two hosts (minimally edited, spelling, grammar, and inflection all original).

Boss sends the original email with a link and zero comments.

But Cody told me that “Miami kid” and “Pitt kid” are the bestest.

Why are we even talking about the draft? Paul and ADB have it all figured out. Trade for the scraps of the Patriots and give their backup who couldn’t play four games without getting injured $80 million.

By the way, Webb is a nice kid, and I once thought he would be awesome, but he is ass.

Yeah, really need to give a guy an $80 M extension when he’s in the last year of his contract. Not like there’s a franchise tag or anything as a short term measure before negotiating an extension if he actually lives up to expectations…

Oh you mean the franchise tag that would lock up $22 million or more of cap space? Thought you wanted to keep Clowney, McKinney, and others? Nah. $22 million to a guy you aren’t sure is worth it is a better idea.

You use it as a short term option if he plays hardball during the offseason. He may want to look elsewhere for not getting an extension after the trade. But he can’t. He will go nowhere and have zero leverage. $17 M is coming off the books anyway with Osweiler leaving, so $22 M next year isn’t that tough a pill to swallow if worst comes to worst. But he will eventually sign a long term deal because he wants one.

If he sucks? You let him walk. You let Osweiler walk. And you lose no one. Don’t get why this is so hard to understand.

Because for the FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR you are back at square one holding your d— in your hand without a quarterback who is worth a s—.

That’s why Romo/Rookie/Savage is a better room than anything involving Jimmy.

Or you can just delay the inevitable holding of the royal wand by saying “screw it, I’m going to buy a Powerball ticket and wait 2 years to see if I hit the jackpot” by drafting from a QB class that, per most scouting accounts, is pretty weak.

I’d gamble on Jimmy because I believe of all the options, he’s the one most likely to work out. And because I think Romo will get hurt. I don’t see how drafting a QB for the sake of drafting one as a backup/future option means that backup/future option will work out. You’re not kicking the can down the road, you’re firing it straight up into the air with a howitzer and hoping it’ll land in a place you picked.

Relax.

Jimmy got hurt after six quarters of action with a better O-line than the Texans had….

Romo/Rookie is two lottery tickets that have different cash times and aren’t as significant of the cost of Jimmy G.
